University Of Birmingham Dubai Introduces Two Disability-Specific Programmes For Special Educational Needs (SEN):

The University of Birmingham Dubai has launched two new Masters-level courses for those looking to teach children with special educational needs, to start from September 2020.

Special Education Needs of Pupils with Autism gives participants the chance to explore the characteristics of autism and the educational needs of pupils with autism, as well as the issue of inclusion will be discussed.

Whereas Issues in the Education of Pupils Identified with ADHD provides a detailed look at the identification and assessment of ADHD in and out of the classroom. Students develop a working knowledge of the psychological and psychiatric aspects of children with ADHD, the roles and responsibilities of child and adolescent mental health services, as well as intervention strategies and their likely outcomes. The course also explores school-based issues related to the achievement of pupils with ADHD and the aspects and effects of adult behaviours both verbal and non-verbal.

The new Continuing Professional Development Programmes(CPD’s) are run as part-time, blended learning and provide 20 credits each. They are designed for in-service teachers, school leaders, education policy leaders, and all those working directly or indirectly with children of determination around the world.

As part of the UAE National Agenda, inclusion is a key focus area within all UAE schools. These courses are offered in addition to the University’s Post Graduate Certificate (PGCert) in Inclusion and Special Educational Needs (ISEN) which was introduced last year, as part of the University’sesteemed School of Education portfolio in the UAE.

“This is a significant milestone for the University, and for the education sector in the UAE, supporting the UAE Government’s National Agenda and the Inclusive Education Policy Framework for schools,” commented University of Birmingham Dubai Provost, Professor Glyn Watson. The programmes will also support the Ministry of Education’s aim of enhancing the status of teachers in the UAE and provide opportunities to share the School’s high-quality provision internationally.”

As the first global top 100 and UK Russell Group university to establish a campus in Dubai, The University of Birmingham Dubai delivers the highest-quality education underpinned by a growing research focus in a leading global educational hub.
