Middlesex University Dubai To Host The 2023 UNFCCC COP28 Climate Law And Governance Day

Middlesex University Dubai To Host The 2023 UNFCCC COP28 Climate Law And Governance Day

Middlesex University Dubai is set to host the Climate Law and Governance Day 2023 (CLGD 2023) on Tuesday December 5th. The influential international symposium is organised and co-hosted by the Climate Law and Governance Initiative (CLGI), Middlesex University Dubai, University of Cambridge, and University of Dubai, together with many valued CLGI partners.

Held in person at Middlesex University Dubai’s Knowledge Park Campus, and broadcast virtually worldwide, CLGD 2023 aligns with the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) Conference of the Parties (COP28), taking place in Dubai from 30 November to 12 December. Building on the legacy of CLGI events co-hosted with key partners during each COP conference since COP11, in Montreal in 2005, CLGD 2023 provides an unparalleled opportunity for students, attendees, and partners to connect and engage with COP28 delegates including leading climate law and governance counsel, experts, and practitioners.

As the premier annual symposium for educators, researchers, practitioners and international law and governance experts, CLGD aims to advance the goals of the Paris Agreement and contribute to creating a sustainable society for future generations. Hosted under the theme of ‘Engaging in Global Stocktake through Legal Lenses’, the 2023 event is centred around four key themes: Operationalising the Paris Agreement in International Law, Testing Legal and Governance Tools for High Ambition Implementation, Advancing Climate Resilience and Justice, and Net Zero Legal Frameworks to Enable Climate Neutral Investment and Finance.

With COP28 expected to attract over 70,000 delegates, governance counsels, experts, and practitioners, CLGD 2023 provides a vital platform for the exchange of ideas and best practices related to achieving a net zero future.

Taking place from 8.30am to 7pm Dubai Local Time GST (GMT+4/CET+2), the transformative event will offer a comprehensive agenda of high-level plenaries, enlightening panel talks, roundtable discussions and workshops. With all to be co-hosted by experts from the University of Cambridge, Middlesex University Dubai, University of Dubai and valued CLGI partners.

Providing meaningful dialogue and clear intentionality for action for all attendees, CLGD 2023 will conclude with the announcement of the winners of the 2023 Climate Law and Governance Global Leadership Awards. The 2023 Students Climate Law and Governance Essay Competition winners will also be announced throughout the day.

Professor Marie-Claire Cordonier Segger WIJA, Executive Secretary of CLGI, says: “The Climate Law and Governance Initiative is a world-leading partnership of law and governance faculties and expert institutes, leading international organisations, lawmakers and government negotiators, judges, law associations and foremost practitioners. Since the 2005 COP11 in Montreal, we have collaborated across the globe, and in 2015 COP21 in Paris, we committed to fostering UNFCCC Paris Agreement implementation on all fronts. We are greatly looking forward to co-hosting CLGD 2023 with the outstanding Middlesex University Dubai and University of Dubai as partners, this year. MDX shares our commitment to sustainability and offering equal opportunities, and I am deeply delighted to unite COP28 delegates and observers, professionals, experts, and students to advance our shared aims and celebrate the Global Leadership Awards together on 5th December.”

Professor Cedwyn Fernandes, Pro-Vice Chancellor of Middlesex University and Director of Middlesex University Dubai, added: “Middlesex University Dubai is proud to be the location for such a pivotal and relevant event surrounding COP28, and to play a part in encouraging the creation of sustainable strategies around the world. At Middlesex University Dubai, our world-leading faculty specialises in pioneering research and education initiatives in critical areas of global interest, including sustainable development and climate change.
